Embryo transfer ( Fresh/Frozen)

The final Step of IVF – Carefully timed, precisely performed

Transferring the embryo into a female’s uterus is the most crucial step in the IVF and this process is referred to as embryo transfer

Depending on multiple factors, the embryo can be transferred  frozen (cryopreserved and transferred later) or fresh (immediately after fertilization) .

Fresh Embryo Transfer

After retrieving eggs, embryos are cultured in the IVF lab and transferred into the female’s uterus in same cycle.

Frozen Embryo Transfer

Embryos are frozen after IVF and then transferred in a later, natural or hormone-controlled cycle.

When is embryo transfer done?

1.

Cleavage stage transfer – Usually done on day 3 when embryos have 6 to 8 cells.

2.

Blastocyst stage – Usually includes transfer of day 5 or day 6 embryo i.e. Blastocyst. At this stage, Embryo has 3 parts – outer layer (trophectoderm), inner cell mass and a fluid fill cavity (blastocoele).

How is embryo transfer done?

1.

Patient lies comfortably on a couch.

2.

If bladder is full then doctor can see your uterus clearly on ultrasound.

3.

A speculum is inserted gently into patient’s vagina to identify the cervix.

4.

With the help of a soft catheter, embryo is placed into the uterus.

5.

You have to rest for some time after transfer.

How many embryos are transferred?

Depending on patient’s age, medical history, previous history of any failed cycles and stage of embryo development at the time of transfer, one to three embryos are transferred

There’s a risk of multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets) if more than one embryo is transferred but at the same time it also increases the chances of pregnancy.

Presently Single embryo transfer (SET) is chosen by many doctors and patients to reduce the health risks and pregnancy complications.

Precautions after embryo transfer?

1.

Your prescribed medicines should be taken properly.

2.

No need for strict bed rest. Patient can continue her routine activities.

3.

Avoid heavy work, stress or intense exercise.

4.

Eat a balanced healthy diet.

When to do pregnancy test?

A blood test (Serum beta-HCG) is usually done 14 days after embryo transfer to confirm preganancy.
