IUI/IVF/ICSI

IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

IUI is Simple Fertility Treatment where the doctor places specially prepared Sperm sample directly inside the patient’s Uterus (Womb) around the time of Ovulation (release of the Egg from ovary)

This gives the sperm a better chance to reach the egg leading to Pregnancy. IUI is a painless OPD procedure & doesn’t require any surgery or anaesthesia & it usually takes just a few minutes.

A patient just needs to lie down for 15 minutes after IUI & then can go home. Patient can continue her routine activities after IUI. There is no need of any extra bed rest or any additional precautions.

Patient usually does a pregnancy test 2 weeks after IUI.

Who can benefit from IUI?

A.

Mild male factor Infertility

B.

Women with Ovulation issues

C.

Minimal to mild Endometriosis

D.

Unexplained Infertility

E.

Erectile dysfunction or other Ejaculatory issues as well as Vaginismus

F.

Cervical factor Infertility

G.

Couples using Donor Sperm

IVF– In-Vitro Fertilization

It means fertilizing an egg with a sperm in an IVF lab. This fertilized egg further grows into an embryo which is further placed inside the women’s uterus, where it can grow into a baby.

Who needs IVF?

A.

Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

B.

Advanced maternal age

C.

Endometriosis

D.

Unexplained infertility

E.

Previous failed IVF cycles

F.

Ovulation problems

G.

Male Factor Infertility

H.

Genetic conditions – To avoid transmission to next generation

I.

Egg or sperm donor services are needed

Steps of IVF?

Ovarian stimulation

Women receive hormone injections for 8 to 12 days to stimulate ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This process is monitored via serial ultrasound and hormone tests.

Egg Retrieval (Ovum pickup)

When the eggs are ready, the patient receives a trigger injection for the final egg maturation. Then these eggs are taken out under anaesthesia using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance.

Sperm Collection

On the day of egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from the male partner either via masturbation or surgical sperm retrieval (if needed). Sometimes a donor semen sample or a frozen semen sample is also used.

Fertilization in Lab

The eggs and sperms are allowed to fertilise in the lab. If required in some cases even ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) can be done i.e. a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.

Embryo Culture

The fertilized eggs are allowed to grow in a special incubator for around 3 to 5 days. These eggs then divide and grow to develop into an embryos.

Embryo Transfer

One or more embryos are selected and then gently placed into the uterus using a soft tube. It is usually painless.

Pregnancy Test

Mostly it’s done around 14 days after embryo is transferred  using urine or blood sample.

ICSI - Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

It is a special technique in which a single healthy sperm is directly injected into an egg in the IVF lab to help fertilization. This method is especially helpful in cases with male factor infertility.

Who needs ICSI?

A.

Oligozoospermia- Low sperm count

B.

Asthenozoospermia- Very poor sperm motility

C.

When most sperms in a sample are structurally abnormal (Teratozoospermia)

D.

Surgically retrieved sperm

E.

Failed fertilization in previous IVF cycles
